EBONY TEARS - "TORTURA INSOMNIAE" (BLACK SUN RECORDS)

My first 'new' discovery of 1998 is certainly Ebony Tears, from Sweden. This band can be labelled as an interesting hybrid between At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity with a nice bit of Skyclad thrown in for good accord (this primarily because of the folky sounding violin that is used on various tracks).

"Tortura Insomniae" captivates from the beginning to the end, starting with "Moonlight", but songs like "Nectar of Eden", "With Tears in my Eyes" and the 10 minute "Skunk Hour" are true death (thrash?) metal gems. There might not be a female singer in the band, but a friend of theirs sings along occasionally for added variation.

One hour of music that everybody ought to listen to. And the cover has beautiful artwork to boot.
