DIMMU BORGIR - "ALIVE IN TORMENT" (NUCLEAR BLAST)

Dimmu Borgir's "Alive in Torment" CD EP is a potentially very interesting offering. The track selection ("Tormentor of Christian Souls", "The Blazing Monoliths of Defiance", "The Insight and the Catharsis", "Puritania" and "The Maelstrom Mephisto") is pretty good (though I would have preferred any track above "Puritania"), for starters. However, there are two things that limit the album's appeal. First, it's released as a shaped CD, meaning it's priced above a regular full-price CD despite it being, to all intents and purposes, a CD single. Second, there's the production. The drums are ace and the vocals are prevalent enough, however the keyboards are sometimes too far in the back of the mix and the guitar sound...the guitar sound is way too rough, too distorted, almost hurtful to the ears, too reminiscent of badly produced Darkthrone.

So there.
